The Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) were part of a coalition deployment to Iraq, 2003. In March an SAS patrol of Long Range Patrol Vehicles (LRPV), a modified form of Land Rover, exchanged rifle fire with elements of the Iraqi Republican Guard during a wide ranging fight across the Iraq Western Desert. Battling from vehicle to vehicle, across kilometres of open space proved inconclusive. Armed with the new Javelin Anti-Tank Weapon System (AAWS), one of the SAS patrols launched a missile to effectively counter the enemy attack and tip the Balance of Power. This was the first firing of a Javelin during combat operations anywhere in the world.
