The winding, scenic journey offers many breathtaking vistas, particularly during the colder winter months. This painting captures a moment in time looking across a valley from the road’s fence line. The final moments of light are captured dramatically in the distant gum trees and foreground grasses as the sunlight is reflected in calm waters.

This painting encapsulates a moment at the end of a dry Autumn when the coldness and rain of Winter is just around the corner. The view is situated along the steep and windy Torrens Hill Road out of Paracombe in the Adelaide foothills, South Australia (part of the Kaurna and Peramangk lands). I was initially drawn to the imposing gum tree, seemingly perched on a precarious edge, and casting a deep shadow over the surrounding foliage. However, beyond the foreground focal area was the brooding cast shadow forming a conspicuous contrast in the distant valley.
